The mission of the EHCP is to guide the ecologically sustainable development of the coastal zone and waters of Elizabeth Harbour with the aim of enhancing tourism, fisheries, and recreational use through stakeholder education and participation and collaborative management of harbour facilities for the benefit of present and future generations.
In 2021, the EHCP created a strategic plan that will be followed through 2026. Our primary objectives under that plan are to:
-
Protect coral reefs and seagrass beds by establishing a state of the art mooring field in Elizabeth Harbour. Our Moorings Initiative launched in 2024 with the Bahamas National Trust!
-
Measure the health of the harbour environment through on going water quality and ecosystem monitoring.
-
Improve harbour water quality by supporting the restart of pumpout boat services and the waste treatment facilities for yachts and local businesses.
-
Support government agencies in monitoring and enforcing harbour rules.
-
Increase stakeholder support for harbour protection and sustainable use through education and awareness.
